This critically-acclaimed movie directed by Héctor Babenco was released back in 1987. It is based on the 1983 novel by William Kennedy.

Ironweed Book

This book received the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Kennedy who also wrote the screenplay of this movie.

It ranked at number ninety-two on the Modern Library list of the 100 Best Novels written in English in the 20th Century.

Again this book is also included in the Western Canon of the critic Harold Bloom, under the Chaotic Age: A Canonical Prophecy.

Interestingly, Ironweed was initially rejected by thirteen publishing houses. It was because Kennedy’s earlier two novels “Legs” and  “Billy Phelan’s Greatest Game” were not successful commercially.

Ironweed Movie Plot Summary

The story is set during the Great Depression. It is about the relationship of a homeless couple.

Francis Phelan, an alcoholic vagrant played by Jack Nicholson and Helen Archer, a terminally ill woman acted by Meryl Streep.

As the story goes, Francis Phelan is a washed-up baseball player. In 1910s, he deserted his family when he accidentally dropped his infant son and killed him.

In the film, you will assumed he was drunk at the time, when he killed his son.

It was until later in the story, he claims he was just tired. But he doesn’t understand why no one will believe in his story.

Since then, Phelan has been a bum, punishing himself. In 1983, he wanders back into his hometown of Albany on Halloween.

Phelan seeks out his lover and drinking companion, Helen Archer. The two meet up in a mission and later in a gin mill.
