Yes, you can watch Youku outside China without VPN or any proxy server even you are living outside Mainland China.
Not only Youku, you can also enjoy viewing all the free movies and TV series from VQQ, iQYi, Le.com, Toudo and others, without using any China IP address server.
In short, you DO NOT need a VPN (virtual private network), a free/paid proxy server or even Chrome Unblock Youku extension.
We all have read that China streaming video websites are said to be geo-restricted.
Those of you who live outside the Mainland China, you cannot access the free shows from video streaming websites like iQiYi, Baidu Video, PPTV, SohuTV, etc.
You have read many blog posts telling you that you need to use a VPN service or a proxy server (like FoxyProxy) to access these China-based websites.
But it is not completely true.
You can still watch all those FREE movies from most video streaming sites based in Mainland China without a VPN or using a China IP address!
I am from Malaysia and below is my IP address.
As I have just mentioned, at Youku, you can watch all the so-called free films, TV series, animated shows, documentaries, etc from various countries.
Last week I re-watched the 2014 Science fiction action flick “Lucy“.
Here is a scene captured from my laptop screen.
This French science fiction action film written and directed by Luc Besson.
Then I continued watching this 2012 classic French melodrama, titled “À coeur ouvert” (An Open Heart).
It stars Juliette Binoche and Edgar Ramirez.
How To Watch Youku Outside China
For those of you who reside outside China, who want to watch free full-length feature films and TV shows from Youku, then read on…
This is a simple guide on how to search for Youku free content, specially for those who do not understand the Chinese language (Mandarin).
Note: You can Google translate the Youku website for your reference, but you CANNOT view any streaming videos from this translated site.
It will only show you a blank black screen.
And if you click on the “free” link in the Google translated website, it will show an error blank white page with the message:
“The page you requested attempted to redirect to itself, which could cause an infinite loop.”
In order to watch the free content of Youku, you need to go to its original site in the Chinese language.
Actually when you click on the “free” link in Chinese (免费), it will open a page for you to filter search the content by category (series, movies, variety, anime, etc), country, genre, year, status, mode of payment and trending.
I think the best way for those who do not under the Chinese language, you need to copy out the Chinese text and paste it onto Google Translate.
I know it’s rather tedious and slightly time-consuming, but that’s the only option to go about searching for the shows you want to watch.
When you start watching the movie, should you see lines of Chinese text streaming across the top part of the screen, you can delete them by clicking on the first small circle with the Chinese character 弹 icon below the movie. (see image below)
Anyway, here are some links from the filter-searched results which you may want to check them out:
