IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE is a solid-through-solid penetration effect by Patricio Teran that was released in 2023.
By the way, previously I explained another one of his tricks called The VAULT: Impossible Link in the Linking Cards Magic Trick Secrets article.
This article is one of my many previously unpublished drafts from the Info Ruckus Magic Trick Secrets Revealed series.
Numerous close-up magic tricks are built around the same underlying concept, typically using cards secured with either a brass fastener or a bolt-and-nut assembly.
Notable examples include PASSAGE by Mickael Chatelain, Card Through Bolt by Kreis Magic, BOLTED (Tenyo T-137), VIZ ESCAPE, and Houdini Bolt Escape.
IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE Penetration Trick Effect
The performer introduces two cards.
One card has two slots cut into it, and both cards have a hole through the center.
A brass paper fastener is inserted through the holes, and its legs are spread apart, apparently locking the two cards together.
The spectator is invited to tug on the cards to verify that the fastener genuinely passes through both cards and securely holds them together.
Then, with a magical gesture, the performer effortlessly slides the cards apart while the brass fastener remains attached to one of them.
According to the promotional materials, the two cards and the brass paper fastener are completely ungimmicked.

IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE by Patricio Teran Trick Secret Explained
The following explanation is based on careful observation of publicly available performance footage and established principles of magic and illusion.
It is offered as informed speculation only and does not claim to reveal or confirm the actual method used by the creator or performer.
Based on my observations, the presentation shown in the promotional video may not necessarily represent the method used during the effect.
For example, at 0:24, the video appears to show both legs of the brass fastener passing through the holes and being spread apart to securely clamp the two cards together.
However, if the cards and the brass fastener (paper brad) are genuinely ungimmicked, I don’t think the cards could be slid apart.
That is, not if both prongs were actually passed through the holes and spread apart as shown above.
My speculation is that, in the actual working method, only one leg of the brass fastener passes through the holes in both cards, while the second leg remains concealed between the cards.
Here is a simple side-view illustration of how the two legs of the brass fastener are positioned.
This arrangement would allow the cards to be separated while creating the illusion that they are still firmly fastened together.
Patricio Teran Card Penetration Trick Tutorial
To verify my theory about how this pocket trick works, I watched other publicly available performance videos.
For example, in this video, you can see that the performer needs a bit of effort to position the legs of the brass fastener correctly at 2:35.
This is because one leg must be inserted covertly between the two cards, while the other is pushed through the holes at the same time.
He then gives the impression that he is pressing and spreading both legs apart beneath the bottom card.
However, the crucial moment when the two legs of the brass fastener are actually protruding through the holes and fully spread apart is never shown.
After separating the two cards, he displays the bottom card with the two legs spread apart.
On closer inspection, you can see that the left leg is pressed flat against the card, while the right leg appears shorter and slightly twisted.
This is because he has to quickly force that leg between the two cards without drawing attention to the move.
IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE Trick Secret Is How To Attach The Brass Fastener
In the Craig Petty’s video, his son inserts the brass fastener into the cards at 0:58 and briefly lifts them toward the camera.
He does an excellent job of creating the impression that both brass legs have passed through the holes.
However, on close observation, it appears that only the brass leg beneath his left forefinger is actually protruding through the holes.
It does not appear to have a corresponding brass leg beneath his right middle finger.
My speculation is that bit of shiny brass visible beneath his right middle finger is indeed the second leg.
But it is still inside the hole, not outside like the other leg.
By pressing his finger very close to the edge of the hole and slightly pulling the card to the right.
And that creates the impression that this second brass leg is also outside the hole.
To sum it up, only one leg of the fastener actually goes through both cards, and the other one is between them.
If my interpretation of Patricio Teran’s IMPOSSIBLE ESACAPE trick secret is correct, you can pull the card free in one direction only.
The card must be free from the same side where the single brass leg actually passes through the holes and folds against the underside of the bottom card.
The Psychology Of IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE By Patricio Teran
The secret method is only one part of what makes IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE so convincing.
The real deception comes from how the human brain processes what it sees, expects, and remembers.
Several well-known psychological principles work together to create the illusion.
Impossible Card Escape Trick Confirmation Bias
The strongest psychological principle at work is confirmation bias.
Once spectators see the brass paper fastener inserted and its legs spread apart, they naturally assume it is assembled in the usual way.
They do not question whether both legs actually pass through the cards.
Their past experience leads them to expect an ordinary assembly.
As a result, the hidden arrangement is much less likely to be noticed.
Object Permanence
Another important principle is object permanence.
After the fastener is secured, spectators mentally treat it as a single, fixed object.
They stop paying attention to the exact position of each leg because they already believe the cards are firmly fastened together.
Perceptual Completion
The illusion also relies on perceptual completion.
This is the brain’s tendency to fill in missing information.
Even though one leg of the paper fastener is hidden between the cards, spectators subconsciously assume it is exactly where they expect it to be.
Expectation
People already know how a brass paper fastener is supposed to work.
Because the object is so familiar, spectators rarely examine it closely.
Their previous experience leads them to expect the fastener to be assembled in the usual way.
As a result, the hidden arrangement is much less likely to be noticed.
Commitment Through Touch
Inviting a spectator to tug on the cards adds another layer of deception.
Feeling the cards resist separation reinforces their belief that the fastener genuinely locks the cards together.
Psychologists refer to this as commitment.
Once people confirm something through their own actions, they become more confident that their conclusion is correct.
Why IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE by Patricio Teran Seems Impossible
None of these psychological principles is powerful on its own.
Together, however, they create a convincing illusion.
By the time the cards unexpectedly slide apart, spectators believe they have already verified that everything is ordinary.
That combination of assumptions, expectations, and personal confirmation makes the penetration seem genuinely impossible.
Final Thought: IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE By Patricio Teran
Based on my analysis, this is the most plausible explanation I can arrive at using publicly available videos.
Whether or not this matches the performer’s actual method, the ingenuity behind the illusion is undeniable.
If you’re interested in performing this effect yourself, the best way to learn it is through the official release.
Purchasing the authorized version from reputable magic dealers such as Penguin Magic or Secret Magic Store.
This is to ensure you receive the professionally manufactured gimmicks, and complete creator instructions.
