Before you get to the really FREE magic books by Jean Hugard, let’s check out a brief story of Australian professional magician.
Jean Hugard (actual name John Gerard Rodney Boyce) was one of the world’s great stage magicians of his time.
During his career, Hugard used various stage names, which include: “Oscar Kellmann”, “Jean Hugarde”, and “Chin Sung Loo” (陳生流).
Do not be confused with Jean Hugard’s “Ching Sung Loo” with the other two similar-sounding Oriental names: “Chung Ling Soo” and “Ching Ling Foo“.
They were all well-known stage magicians.
Chung Ling Soo
Ching Ling Soo is the stage-name of American magician William Ellsworth Robinson.
Robinson (Chung Ling Soo) is most known today for his accidental death due to a failed bullet catch trick on March 23, 1918.
Ching Ling Foo
Ching Ling Foo ( (金陵福) is the stage name for an actual Chinese magician Chee Ling Qua(朱連魁).
This Beijing-born magician is said to be the first modern East Asian magician to achieve world fame.

It was said that Jean Hugard became interested in magic after watching the performance of Austrian Professor Louis Haselmayer aka “Prince of Prestidigitators“.

Jean Hugard was also inspired by his first book on magic by Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, titled “The Secrets Of Conjuring And Magic” (Les Secrets De La Prestidigitation Et De La Magie).
The English translation was translated by Angelo John Lewis, or better known by his pen name “Professor Hoffmann“.

In 1915 Hugard moved to the USA and worked in vaudeville acts from 1916 until 1918.
One of his popular stage illusion act was called “The Birth Of The Pearl” and not “The Birth Of The Sea Nymph“, which is popularly featured in posters, as the one shown below:
One source said it was created by American illusion builder Charles Catulle, who also built the Cremation Illusion prop for Harry Blackstone Sr.
But according to this site, “The Birth Of The Pearl” illusion was built by Phil Davies for Australian illusionist Maurice Rooklyn.
It was much later, he manufactured this illusion for Jean Hugard, who performed it for the rest of his career.
After Jean Hugard retired from performing, he wrote and edited more than 30 magic books.
