Does MAD Magazine Still Exist?
MAD magazine still exist, but it does not published any new original content any more.
MAD ended newsstand distribution, but still continues selling in comic-book stores and via subscription.
What Did MAD Magazine Stands For?
For the uninitiated, MAD magazine is a irreverent and highly influential satirical humor magazine published by EC Comics (Entertaining Comics).
This humor magazine since 1952, has been making fun at life in general, and popular culture, social fads, news items, and political issues of the moment until today.
Back then, MAD magazine taught its readers how to be healthy skeptics and they shouldn’t believe everything they read in their textbooks or saw on TV.
Who would forget MAD‘s TV and movie parodies, and satire articles about everyday occurrences.
The other equally favorites among the MAD readers are “Spy vs. Spy” by Antonio Prohias, “The Lighter Side Of…“, a satirical comic strip series written and drawn by Dave Berg, “A Mad Look At…“, and the speechless gag strips called “A Mad Look At…” by Sergio Aragonés.
I love those incisive jabs at Madison Avenue, hypocritical politicians and our mindless consumption.
And the creative end-page MAD Fold-ins feature by Al Jaffee.
From 1952 to 2018, MAD published 550 issues, together with reprint “Specials”, original-material paperbacks, reprint compilation books and other print projects.
MAD magazine, the “Irreverent Baby Boomer Humor Bible” was most popular in 1974, where MAD’s circulation reached 2.1 million.
Unfortunately after 67 years, MAD magazine no longer sold on newsstands and will only be available through comic book shops, or mailed to subscribers.
MAD Magazine still publishes its annual year-end issue, as well as the occasional books and special editions.
It will still reprint archival material with new covers.

MAD Comic Books
The laughter started way back in 1952 as a 10-cent comic book spoofing other comics, before it changed into a magazine format in 1955.
After 23 issues as a comic book format, the publisher and co-editor of EC Comics William M. Gaines converted MAD comic book to a magazine.
The first issue of MAD comic book was written and illustrated by editor Harvey Kurtzman and together with artwork by illustrators such as Jack Davis, Will Elder, Wally Wood , Basil Wolverton, Bernie Krigstein and John Severin.
Harvey Kurtzman MAD Creator
Harvey Kurtzman was the mastermind behind the launch of Mad magazine.
Kurtzman was known for satire and parody of popular culture, and social critique.
In 1956, Harvey Kurtzman left MAD over a dispute with EC’s owner William M. Gaines over financial control.
Then he still continue his cartooning work, including editing the glossy magazine of satire and humor, “Trump” and the self-published his short-lived humor magazine called “Humbug“.
In 1959, he produced the first book-length work of original comics, the adult-oriented, satirical “Jungle Book” (which is included below).

Gaines got Harvey Kurtzman to launch the comic book “Tales Calculated to Drive You MAD” (subtitled “Humor in a Jugular Vein”).

Alfred E Neuman What, Me Worry Mad Magazine
MAD’s fictitious mascot is a freckle-faced guy with his gap-tooth smile character is called Alfred E. Neuman together with its motto “What, me worry?”
Who Is Alfred E Neuman Based On?
It was said that Harvey Kurtzman first spotted the image of this grinning boy on a postcard pinned to the office bulletin board of Ballantine Books editor Bernard Shir-Cliff.
In 1954, Harvey Kurtzman claimed this character and two years later, he was named “Alfred E. Neuman” by Mad’s second editor, Al Feldstein.
The letter “E” in Alfred E Neuman stands for Enigma.
In November 1954, Neuman made his Mad debut on the front cover of Ballantine’s The Mad Reader, a paperback collection of reprints from the first two years of Mad.
Alfred E. Neuman first full-cover appearance was as a write-in candidate for President on issue No. 30, December 1956.
MAD’s mascot, Alfred E. Neuman, was often on the cover, with his face replacing that of a celebrity or character who was being lampooned.

readers with its controversial “Middle Finger” No. 166 April
issue.

He did a TIME magazine cover artwork, titled “Battle For The Senate“, October 26 1970 issue.
Mort Drucker drew the film poster for George Lucas’ 1973 movie “American Graffitti“.
